Date changes for Sin City (Manchester) [Feb. 8th, 2007|01:14 pm]
As of March, Sin City will be switching to once a month, and will be moving dates to the first Saturday of every month.

Which means that the next handful of Sin City nights will be:

- 10th February
- 24th February
- 3rd March
- 7th April
- 5th May
- etc

This shift to a new date has come about as a result of negotiations with the good folks from The Retro Bar, and (I think) it now means that Sin City will fall on a weekend where there isn't much else going on in the city...

It should also mean that it doesn't clash with any of the other club nights that you good folks love ("Monster Monster", etc).

So, now there's no excuse not to get your dancing shoes on for the first Saturday of every month, is there?

Please help spread news of the new date to anyone you know who may be thinking of coming down...

Note: February dates are unaffected, and will still be on the 2nd and last Saturday. This change only comes into effect from March!

Thanks & see you on Saturday,
Quiff Boy

Sin City - this Saturday (13th January) [Jan. 7th, 2007|10:23 pm]
Just a quick reminder that the next Sin City is *this* Saturday :)

That's Saturday 13th January.

Due to LeFreak's extended vacation, I will once again be joined on "the old 1s and 2s" for the evening by the Mancunian DJ legend that is Malc. None of us are worthy. ;-)

More here: http://www.sincitymanchester.co.uk/

Wow, it's been a long time since I looked in here!!

Cheers,
Quiff Boy

Winter in July - A Summer Spectacular [Jun. 28th, 2006|07:20 pm]

Winter in July - A Summer Spectacular

Heartland and Friday Flock are joining forces once again to provide two days of summer indulgence in the tropical oasis that is Leeds, West Yorkshire.

  • On Friday 14th July, The Mixing Tin will be full of "smoke, floods, and stolen goods" as The Sisters Of Murphy bring their infamous Floorshow to Leeds...

...then from 10pm onwards Leeds' favourite Goth night Friday Flock will take place in the same venue - the Phono may be gone but it's legacy lives on!

  • On Saturday 15th July, Heartland - the largest online community dedicated to The Sisters of Mercy - will be back in it's spiritual home beneath The George for a night of traditional goth (and related) tunes.

The Heartland Discussion Forum is the largest and most active The Sisters of Mercy community on the web. Boasting in excess of 1700 members from all over the globe, Heartland is the place to go for anything Sisters-related.

Did you ever doubt it?

After spending a few weeks watching the girls' foray into the United States and surrounding territories, a few stop-overs in the more tolerable parts of mainland Europe, and a whistle-stop tour of our very own green and pleasant land, we realise some of you may be in need of a little traditional British summer sunshine, courtesy of The People's Republic of West Yorkshire and us, your gracious hosts for the weekend.

As before, we're particularly keen to provide members and non-members alike with another visit to "Planet Dave". Happily, The George is very near Leeds General Infirmary, so no one will have too far to travel afterwards.

Previous weekenders have been a roaring success and we've been lucky enough to play host to some very special guests both on- and off-stage, so don't forget to bring your autograph books!

And remember pop kids, 1983 most definitely is a fashion statement.

» DJs Quiff Boy (Heartland), Penger, Paul (Friday Flock) and guests tbc.

» Full details, including how to purchase discounted advance tickets are available here:
http://www.myheartland.co.uk/july/

Just remember to bring your suncream, beach towel, and bucket and spade.

Danke,
QB

James Ray presents 4080 Peru - Live in Leeds, Sunday 9th October 2005 [Sep. 20th, 2005|06:27 pm]
[Current Mood | chipper]

James Ray presents 4080 Peru

We can now reveal that the "special guests" for Black Oktober's Sunday night gig will be none other than James Ray's 4080 Peru!

James came to our attention in the mid-80s as part of The Sisterhood, Andrew Eldritch's side project during Sisters downtime, and then went on to record "alternative" dancefloor classics such as Dust Boat, Texas, Destination Assassination, Rev Rev Lowrider, and many others under the guise of James Ray's Gangwar and James Ray & The Performance, both of whom were signed to The Sisters of Mercy's own Merciful Release label.

Prior to their split, Gangwar and Performance gigs were legendary for their alcohol-fuelled, riotous take on electronic rock and roll.

That was then, this is now.

James' latest incarnation 4080 Peru will be headlining the Sunday night gig at the Bassment, and have promised us a few surprises.

Black Oktober 2005 in the People's Republic! [Aug. 15th, 2005|06:42 pm]
[Current Mood | impressed]
[Current Music |The Sisters: Tilburg 2005]

Black Oktober 2005 in the People's Republic!

Once again Black Sheep, Heartland and Friday Flock are joining forces for another long weekend of mischief in Leeds!

  • On Friday 7th October, Leeds' favourite Goth night "Friday Flock" takes places at the "Bar Phono" - the notorious nightclub that gave the world the "Goth two-step", not to mention inspiring the odd Sisters track! More info

  • On Saturday 8th October, "Heartland" - the largest online Sisters of Mercy forum - will be taking over The George for a night of traditional G*th (and related) tunes.

The Heartland Discussion Forum is the largest and most active The Sisters of Mercy community on the web. Boasting in excess of 900 members from all over the globe, Heartland is the place to go for anything Sisters-related. And now we are having a party.

You are cordially invited to join us in the forthcoming Black Oktober 2005 celebrations wherein a smattering of top quality DJs will bring you another night of utterly bastard groovy songs inspired by, and dedicated to, The Sisters of Mercy... and one or two other g*thic rock ensembles.

    - GASP! at the beautiful people strutting their stuff on the dance floor.
    - MARVEL! at the heavenly music bursting forth from the PA System as if its 1985 again.
    - STARE IN WONDER! at the amount of PVC, eyeliner and hairspray collected together in one room.

DJs Quiff Boy (Heartland), Penger (Wishville) Paul (Black Sheep), Andy (Resurrected)
The Cellar Bar, The George, Great George Street, Leeds; 8pm - 1am, £3.00 on the door

  • And on Sunday 9th October, the Bassment will be full of "smoke, floods and stolen goods" - The Sisters Of Murphy + Corrosion + Special guests

The Sisters Of Murphy sound a lot like a certain other band with a very similar name... in fact they sound an awful lot like that band, so much so that they even play all the same songs and everything! Featuring the return of Sid on vocals (the definitive Mock Eldritch) The Sisters will be bringing their brand of Smoke, Floods and Stolen Goods to the weekly Black Sheep clubnight for a third time. Support will come from special guests Corrosion, plus quite possibly a third band...

The Sisters Of Murphy - 7pm to 11pm @ The Bassment, Wade Lane, Leeds. £5. More info

Yes, tonight we're gonna party like its 1985.

Salvation
The Complete Collection 1985-89
CDMGOTH23

Formed in 1983, Salvation were one of the original Leeds based Goth bands and brought out their first 12" on Merciful Release - the Sisters of Mercy's label. Salvation went on to become regular visitors to the Indie Top 20 alongside their contemporaries: The Mission, Skeletal Family and Red Lorry Yellow Lorry.

Signing to Miles Copeland's IRS label, success beckoned but the band acrimoniously split the following year. 15 years on, amidst the current 80's obsession, it's time to reappraise Salvation's valuable contribution to the early alternative rock scene.

‘The Complete Collection 1985-89’ (CDMGOTH23) features 20 tracks which have been digitally remastered. It brings together all of Salvation's recorded work from 1985-89, and includes bonus track "Girlsoul" - their Andy Eldritch produced debut - which appears here on CD for the first time.

The Shining / Shattered Sky / Jessica's Crime / Lady Faith / Angel Pain / The Answer / Strange Fruit / Diamond Child / Puppet Master / Sea Of Dreams / Thunderbird / Unicorn / Listen To Her Heart / Sunshine Superman / Payola / Pearl Necklace / All And More / The Happening / She's An Island / Girlsoul

March Violets website update: new forum added [Feb. 11th, 2005|12:50 am]
[Current Mood | sleepy]
[Current Music |Christian Death: Ashes]

The March Violets were a great band......a really great band. They were labelmates with The Sisters of Mercy, yet darker and infinitely more messed up than them, and through constant gigging they became integral to the whole Leeds/M62 scene in the early/mid 1980s. We loved them, John Peel loved them, and we assume you loved them too. That's why you're here after all

The website has been online for a while now and has been something of success in terms of giving interested parties a place to find out about this most enigmatic of Leeds’ bands, raising their profile, jogging a few memories, collecting and collating old photos, and even getting a few of the old band back in touch with each other.

All of which is rather marvellous, but we’ve received a few suggestions recently about creating a forum or guestbook so that people viewing the site can leave comments, ask questions, share anecdotes and memories, etc.

We think this is a splendid idea.

Thus we present you with the March Violets forum.

http://www.marchviolets.co.uk/forum/

Its small and neat, and we think its rather groovy.

Come on in, the water’s purple.

Heartland's 3rd Birthday Bash [Dec. 6th, 2004|02:05 pm]
SO DARK ALL OVER YORKSHIRE
Heartland's 3rd Birthday Weekender: 4th, 5th & 6th February 2005

You are cordially invited to join us in the forthcoming celebrations of Heartland's 3rd Birthday.

We'd like to say that the forum wouldn't have been the same without you, but that would be a lie. It would have. Probably better in fact.

Furthermore, we were going to keep it low-key and only invite the nicer ones amongst you, but then we realised it would be a very small, intimate affair, so it's open house. Feel free to bring your good self and a friend, a partner, a pet gimp, whatever. Just be there.

No excuses this time. Some of you take this "do" thing far too lightly for our liking.

The weekend's festivities run accordingly:

  • Friday 4th Feb 2005: "Friday Flock" 1st Birthday @ The Phono, Leeds (9pm - 2am, £3 before 11, £4 after)

  • Saturday 5th Feb 2005: "Heartland" 3rd Birthday @ The George, Leeds (8pm - 1am, £2.50 on the door)

  • Sunday 6th Feb 2005: The Sisters of Murphy @ The Bassment, Leeds (7pm - 11pm, £3 on the door)

More to follow, including details of how to buy special weekend passes for a paltry £7.

Interview with Tom Ashton in the latest edition of "The Mick" [Nov. 7th, 2004|08:10 pm]
[Current Mood | tired]
[Current Music |The Killers: Hot Fuss]

An interview with Tom Ashton (ex-March Violets) in issue #8 of Mick Mercer's e-magazine. Highlights include a plug for my www.marchviolets.co.uk website and this rather interesting comment:

Rosie, Loz and myself have been talking about the possibility of a reunion. We are all very much up for it. It would have to be the original line up with Simon though. Does anyone know where he is? Oh, what a catharsis if we could get out there and pick up where we left off in 1984... something to see I would think!

Too Hip To Be Square [Sep. 21st, 2004|01:17 pm]
Too Hip To Be Square

A weekend of Winter madness.

Ladies and Gents, arrange your Monday off work, get your train tickets to Leeds sorted and a room at The Ibis booked, for we are staging another event.

Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th of November 2004

Saturday 27th – Fraser’s “Winter Wishville Shindig” at The George
Another night of quality music from across the genres and time space continuum, as well as the odd Chameleons related track thrown in for good measure, of course. Lots of old-school tunes, a few eclectic surprises, cheap beer and a guest DJ set from yours truly. Get in!

Sunday 28th – “Heartland DJs v The Mighty Rhombus” at The Bassment
The piece of resistance, as it were. The high point of your weekend. Black Sheep presents a very live and very loud show by the very marvellous Rhombus, preceded and proceeded by DJ sets by myself, Fraser and Phono Paul. You know what to expect: lots of smoke, one or two mirrors, a couple of floods and maybe even a stolen guitar (player)…

Whilst this isn’t quite a full-on Heartland bash, we expect the forum to be well represented and the music to be fittingly groovy. It really would be quite good if you could make both nights…

Ghost Dance site update [Sep. 14th, 2004|08:48 pm]
[Current Mood | geeky]
[Current Music |Ghost Dance: Gone, Gone, Gone]

Taken from the official Ghost Dance website:

September songs

Posted by Gary Marx on 14 September 2004

You can tell a rock star's losing their looks when they start using photos of their feet for promo shots. The eagle-eyed among you may have spotted my big toe making a bid for immortality in the Image Gallery.

Elsewhere you may have spotted Richard Watson going uncredited for supplying us with the live at Reading tunes.

To make amends we've added versions of Walk In My Shadow and Heaven And Beyond and the nearest we'll get to an apology. Another Richard (Hunter) came through with a live version of Gone, Gone, Gone which we've added to the audio downloads - if you listen to it twice you've heard it more times than any member of the band.

Lots more to follow including news of how to order our new t-shirts...
